Acceptance of Terms

By using RateMyPlace, you agree to these terms of service. If you do not agree, please do not use our service.

User Accounts

  • You must provide a valid email address to create an account.
  • You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account.
  • You may only create one account per person.
  • You must be at least 18 years old to use this service.

Review Guidelines

When submitting reviews, you agree to:

  • Only review properties where you have actually lived
  • Provide honest and accurate information
  • Not include personal information about landlords, property managers, or other tenants
  • Not post defamatory, threatening, or illegal content
  • Not submit fake or misleading reviews

User Content & Responsibility

When you submit a review or other content to RateMyPlace, you understand and agree that:

  • Your reviews represent your personal opinions based on your individual experience as a tenant. Reviews are subjective assessments, not verified statements of fact.
  • You are solely responsible for the content of your reviews. RateMyPlace does not adopt, endorse, or verify user-submitted content.
  • You must have actually lived at the property you are reviewing. Submitting reviews for properties where you have not resided is a violation of these terms.
  • You grant RateMyPlace a license to display, distribute, and use your submitted content in connection with operating the platform.
  • Your review may be identifiable to landlords or property managers based on details you provide, even without your name attached. You acknowledge this risk when submitting.

Platform Role & Safe Harbor

RateMyPlace operates as a neutral platform for tenant reviews:

  • We provide a venue for tenants to share their rental experiences but do not create, verify, or endorse the content of reviews.
  • We are not responsible for the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any user-submitted content.
  • As an interactive computer service provider, we are protected under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act and are not treated as the publisher of user-generated content.
  • We reserve the right, but have no obligation, to monitor, edit, or remove content at our sole discretion.

Content Moderation

We reserve the right to remove reviews that violate our guidelines. Reviews are checked before being published. We may also suspend or terminate accounts that repeatedly violate our terms.

Dispute Resolution for Property Owners

If you are a landlord or property manager who believes a review violates our guidelines:

  • Submit a Dispute: Property owners may submit a dispute if they believe a review contains false statements, personal information, or other guideline violations. Our moderation team will investigate.
  • Legal Disputes: Legal disputes regarding review content should be directed to the review author. As a neutral platform, RateMyPlace does not adjudicate factual disputes between tenants and landlords.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless RateMyPlace, its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from: (a) your use of the service; (b) your violation of these terms; (c) your violation of any third-party rights, including intellectual property or privacy rights; or (d) any content you submit to the platform.

Disclaimer

Reviews on RateMyPlace reflect the subjective opinions and personal experiences of individual users. Important disclaimers:

  • We do not verify the accuracy, truthfulness, or completeness of reviews.
  • We do not endorse or adopt any statements made in user reviews.
  • Reviews should not be the sole basis for rental decisions.
  • Prospective tenants should conduct their own due diligence.
  • We are not responsible for any decisions made based on review content.

Limitation of Liability

RateMyPlace is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, RateMyPlace shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses resulting from: (a) your use or inability to use the service; (b) any content obtained from the service; (c) unauthorized access to your account; or (d) any other matter relating to the service.

Changes to Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new terms.
